This song was written by Jule Styne and Sammy Cahn for the World War II era, all-star, musical "Follow the Boys" (1944). It was originally titled "I'll Walk Alone" and sung from the perspective of a devoted sweetheart waiting for her loved one to return home from the war. It was #5 on the pop charts that year.

Later, special Christmas lyrics were written for Dinah Shore to sing on a holiday radio broadcast for the troops fighting overseas. This version is sometimes called "I'll Walk Alone Through Every Christmas".

As the daughter of a "Rosie the Riveter", I feel very connected to my mother's stories of the World War 2 era. I'll always remember her stories of love and loss. I find this particular version of the song, so poignant and full of longing. I sing it now, to acknowledge the past, as well as the present sacrifices, which our troops and their families have made for all of us.
